Bavona Valley is one of the most savage in the Alpine area. To survive in harmony in these spartan surroundings, people have developed strategies and constructed stone structures over centuries, which still impress today: terraced fields, hanging gardens, cellars and stables beneath enormous rocks, peaty and rustic.

The colours of the water in Fontana are amazing as is the power of the stone: rocky mountain slopes and enormous rocks. The main power point is near the arched bridge in the valley: the water is vital to this landscape, filling it with positive energy and beauty.

The Sabbione area is crisscrossed by an energetic earth meridian. To get to this point, leave the trail (transhumance) and walk down through the village to the river (then go back up the same way to resume the hike). Over the Bavona bridge to the left is a meadow with a magic atmosphere containing stones arranged in a half-moon shape. This stone semicircle could be the ancient site of a lunar cult and is well described in the book “Luoghi energetici in Ticino” (energy centres in Ticino) (C. Andretta, Casagrande Editore).

The high Foroglio waterfall is a marvel. The abundant water and energy crash onto the underlying rocks sending spray all over. In the air near a waterfall there are up to 50,000 ionised particles per square centimetre: they have a vitalising and positive effect on health.

You can reach Bavona Valley by car or bus (number 315 “Vallemaggia” from Locarno to Bignasco, then with the post bus). The journey starts at Fontana where there are some carparks and a post bus stop. Take the official route from Fontana (600m) to Bavona Valley, known as “sentiero della transumanza”, (route for moving cattle) which goes up towards Foroglio. Following about an hour's walk, passing Sabbione (647m) and Ritorto (650m), you will reach Foroglio waterfall (684m). You can return by the same route or by bus.
