Chiesa di S. Maria delle Grazie

Maggia

In the locality known as Campagna, outside the village, is the Church of S. Maria delle Grazie, a building erected towards the end of the 15th century around a small votive chapel and later enlarged. The small rectangular-shaped church has a small porch at the entrance, a roof made of poplar and a small bell gable. The west wall is smooth with three small windows, while to the east the outline of the chapel incorporated in 1600 emerges. The modesty of the exterior contrasts sharply with the richness of the interior decoration; the frescoes on the walls and in the choir were executed in several stages and date from the 16th to the mid-19th century. There are also numerous votive offerings dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the oratory. The signature of G. A. Vanoni of Aurigeno stands out among many anonymous artists with the painting "The Roman benefactors".
