Explanation
Hiking tour from Alpe di Neggia to the traditional Ticino village of Indemini, built entirely from stone. The panoramic view from Monte Gambarogno across Lago Maggiore is quite unusual. Cheese is available for tasting at Alpe Cedullo, and a visit to the free-standing Sant’Anna church is highly recommended.
Alpe di Neggia, easy to reach by postbus, is the start of the pleasant mule track from the top of the pass to the peak of Monte Gambarogno. The views of Lago Maggiore and the entire Alpine mountain range from the summit are extraordinary. The panorama ranges from the Monte Rosa massif to the Mischabel mountain range and to Basòdino, the second highest mountain of the Ticino Alps at 3272 m. Here you will also find the newly renovated Capanna Gambarögn.
The descent to Alpe Cedullo takes wide, sweeping curves along the western hillside. It is a great place to stop and taste the locally produced cheese. Climbing gently uphill again, it takes just a few minutes to reach the top of the pass with the Oratorio di Sant’Anna. The solitary little church is located on the border with Italy. The valuable frescoes on the inside are a highlight. They are attributed to a group of artists, including Antonio da Tradate (14th /15th century) and show a nursing Madonna. The former hermitage behind the chapel is now used as a shelter.
The last section back to the village of Indemini continues on a comfortable road along the hillside of Sassi Gialli. After Val Crosa the first stone roofs of the village soon beckon through the tree tops of the birch forest. Indemini is the only traditional Ticino village built completely from locally quarried stone. With the houses standing close together, with stone roofs, lanes and stairs, it embodies the spirit of a mountain village.
