Located at an altitude of about 1,200 metres, Monte Comino has a rich variety of flora and fauna. This can be put down to soil characteristics, geographical position and the significant farming carried out in the area in previous centuries. Areas of particular interest include the Pian Segna peat bog and meadows/dry pastures catalogued as being of national importance: the peat bog is home to plant species such as purple moor-grass, common sedge, marsh violet and deergrass, as well as peat mosses, hare’s tail cottongrass, round-leaved sundew and white beak-sedge. Pools of water are scattered across the peat bog. These are the favourite destinations of the common frog, barred grass snake and at least three different kinds of dragonfly, including the rare northern emerald. During the spring, the meadows and dry pastures are covered in countless flowers, such as the paridisia, Koch’s gentian and elder-flowered orchid. Given the sparse vegetation and plentiful flowers, these meadows are home to numerous insects, including butterflies, crickets and grasshoppers. With a little luck you might come across the Adonis blue, a small butterfly with blue wings. Various species of reptile complete the picture.

From the village of Verdasio follow route 631 for a short section before taking the path on the left that climbs towards Monte Comino. After several bends, you will reach the first nationally important meadow and dry pasture area. Follow the signs for Pian Segna to the small church. The peat bog is immediately behind. Continue towards Calascio, walking anticlockwise around the Monte Aula. You will pass through the town of A Dröi (lookout point) and close the circle, crossing another magnificent nationally recognised meadow before finally arriving at the cable car station.
